Study Description and Objectives

Panel Intelligence engaged a set of eight dialysis clinic owners and managers to understand experiences with NxStage Medical’s (NXTM) home hemodialysis system NxStage System One™. Secondary objectives of this study included the following:

§    Estimate current penetration of the NxStage System One™ into the hemodialysis (HD) market, patient types most likely to use the system, and market opportunity.

§    Gauge differences in perceptions of home dialysis units among small community dialysis centers and those affiliated with large firms (i.e., DaVita, Wellbound / Satellite Healthcare, Fresenius).

§    Understand the home dialysis market from the point of view of the large and small clinic owner/managers, especially any perceived threats to patient volumes and risks of adopting the system.

§    Compare the patient experience versus traditional HD patients in terms of number of dialysis treatments per week, medication usage in general, and erythropoietin usage levels.

§    Identify barriers and facilitators to adoption of the System One™ home HD system, especially issues related to cost, risk, support staff needed, and the associated learning curve.

§    Understand impact of managed care on clinic revenues and margins as it pertains to use of home HD.

§    Determine impact of the recent NxStage recall on perceptions of the system among current users and potential adopters.

Inclusion Criteria and Panelist Demographics

Inclusion Criteria

 

§    US-based dialysis clinic owners, medical directors and/or managers – nephrologists, RNs

§    Mix of urban and rural clinics, privately owned and public; geographic distribution

§    At least 50% of professional time must be spent in the dialysis clinic setting

§    Must be a key decision maker in purchasing decisions for the clinic

§    Clinic serves 100 or more end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients per month, on average

§    At least moderately familiar with the NxStage System One™ home HD system (at least 5 out of 10 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 = not at all familiar; 10 = currently using)

§    Target 1 to 2 whose clinics have not yet used the system; the remainder should have experience with the system

§    Target 50% small dialysis clinics and 50% dialysis clinics associated with larger firms (i.e. DaVita, Fresenius, Renal Advantage, Satellite Healthcare / WellBound)
